Jermaine Lamarr Cole, known as J. Cole, is an American rapper and producer born in 1985 on a military base in Germany and raised in Fayetteville, North Carolina. He first gained recognition with his mixtape The Come Up in 2007, followed by The Warm Up and Friday Night Lights. Signing with Roc Nation in 2009, he quickly rose to prominence with his debut album Cole World The Sideline Story and its follow-up Born Sinner, both reaching the top of the US charts and producing hits like Work Out, Power Trip, and Crooked Smile. Cole is celebrated for shifting from mainstream sounds to more thoughtful, socially conscious themes in albums such as 2014 Forest Hills Drive, 4 Your Eyez Only, and KOD.
