Warm Audio WA-FT
The WA-FT Fen-tone is a ribbon microphone inspired by an iconic model from the 1950s, used by artists such as Jack White (The White Stripes), John Mayer (John Mayer Trio), and John Petrucci (Dream Theater). Combining vintage character with modern components, it offers a rich sound with tight basses and full mids, all without harsh high frequencies. The integrated Warm Lifter active preamp with 26 dB of gain allows for use with weaker preamps.
Technology and Sound Quality
The Fen-tone utilizes a thin 1.8 µm aluminum ribbon (99.1% purity) and a powerful neodymium magnet, allowing it to capture the subtle nuances of instrument sounds with exceptional sensitivity. The CineMag USA transformer contributes to the microphone’s rich, musical sound character, making it perfect for electric guitars, overheads, and brass instruments. The frequency response of 30 Hz to 15 kHz ensures full bass, rich mids, and pleasantly “warm” highs without aggressive sibilance. The natural mild roll-off above 15 kHz effectively eliminates unpleasant sibilance and harsh highs. The bi-directional (figure-eight) polar pattern enhances natural spatial perception and efficiently reduces side leakage.
Control Options and Integration
The microphone is equipped with an optional Warm Lifter active preamp with a JFET circuit, adding 26 dB of analog gain. With an impedance of 5 kOhms, it’s suitable for direct connection to standard audio interfaces and lower-end preamps without any concerns about loss of quality or volume. Turning off the circuit allows for passive operation. Thanks to its improved design and low noise, the WA-FT is effective even at greater distances from the sound source, making it perfect for use as a drum overhead or room microphone.
Build and Connectivity
The WA-FT features a compact pencil body made from anodized aluminum with side vents that contribute to faithful sound capture and a balanced frequency response. It comes with a standard XLR output and an eight-pattern polar characteristic that simplifies stereo recording or capturing two sources opposite each other. The maximum acoustic pressure level is up to 148 dB SPL, making it suitable for very loud sources, such as guitar amps, drums, brass instruments, and more. The design is made for versatile use—from close proximity to a guitar cabinet to ambient recordings in an acoustic space.
Additional Features and Special Characteristics
In addition to its sound qualities, the Fen-tone boasts hand quality control at the manufacturer's headquarters in Austin, Texas, where each unit undergoes a thorough inspection. The package includes a sturdy transport case, microphone holder, and protective mic cover. This comprehensive kit ensures the microphone is ready for demanding studio and stage use straight out of the box.
