The Fall were an influential English post-punk band formed in 1976 in Prestwich, Greater Manchester. Led by Mark E. Smith, the band's only constant member, The Fall became known for their abrasive, repetitive sound, driving bass and drums, and Smith's distinctive, sardonic lyrics. While the group underwent frequent lineup changes, long-serving members included bassist Steve Hanley, drummers Paul Hanley, Simon Wolstencroft, and Karl Burns, as well as guitarists Craig Scanlon, Marc Riley, and Brix Smith. Across their four-decade career, The Fall released 31 studio albums and built a cult following, despite limited commercial success. Celebrated for their prolific output and innovation, they were championed by BBC DJ John Peel, who often featured them on his sessions. The band disbanded after Mark E. Smith's death in 2018.
