Smoke City was an English band known for their distinctive mix of acid jazz, trip hop, and Brazilian influences such as samba and bossa nova, often featuring Portuguese in their lyrics. They rose to prominence in 1997 with the hit single Underwater Love, which gained widespread attention after being featured in a Levi's television commercial directed by Michel Gondry. Their acclaimed debut album, Flying Away, produced tracks like Mr. Gorgeous and Águas de março and earned recognition as one of the best trip-hop albums of all time. In 2001, they released Heroes of Nature, which included a cover of John Lennon's Imagine in its extended edition. Smoke City also contributed to the AIDS benefit compilation Onda Sonora: Red Hot plus Lisbon before disbanding in 2002.
