The Dark

The Dark

Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark, known as OMD, is an English electronic band formed in 1978 in Meols, Merseyside by Andy McCluskey and Paul Humphreys. As pioneers of synth-pop, they fused experimental minimalism with catchy melodies, helping shape the genre in the UK and introducing the "synth duo" format to British music. OMD rose to fame with their breakout single "Electricity" and the hit "Enola Gay," earning acclaim for their influential albums such as Architecture and Morality. After some lineup changes and shifts in musical direction, including commercial hits like "If You Leave" from the film Pretty in Pink, OMD continued to find success in both Europe and the United States. Although the band briefly disbanded in the 1990s, McCluskey and Humphreys reunited in 2006, returning to their experimental roots. With over 40 million records sold worldwide and numerous chart hits, OMD remain a key force in electronic music, inspiring artists across multiple genres.
