MC5

MC5

MC5, short for Motor City Five, was a groundbreaking American rock band from Lincoln Park, Michigan, formed in 1963. Featuring Rob Tyner on vocals, Wayne Kramer and Fred "Sonic" Smith on guitars, Michael Davis on bass, and Dennis Thompson on drums, MC5 became known for their loud, energetic sound that blended garage rock, hard rock, blues rock, and psychedelic influences. Their revolutionary music and leftist, anti-establishment lyrics made them symbols of the 1960s counterculture and pioneers of punk rock, with many, including Tom Morello, crediting them with inventing the genre. Their debut live album Kick Out the Jams, along with Back in the USA and High Time, are considered rock staples, and the title track Kick Out the Jams is widely celebrated and covered. Renowned for their fiery live performances and political stance, MC5 were featured on the cover of Rolling Stone in 1969 and remain highly influential in rock history. Despite lineup changes, deaths of key members, and several reformations, the band’s legacy endured, culminating in their 2024 induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and the release of their final album, Heavy Lifting.
