Charlie Haden was an influential American jazz double bassist, composer, bandleader, and educator whose career spanned over five decades. He played a key role in shaping modern jazz bass by developing a style that balanced supporting and independent lines, transforming the bassist’s role in jazz ensembles. Haden was a founding member of the Ornette Coleman Quartet in the late 1950s, a group credited with pioneering free jazz. He later formed the Liberation Music Orchestra with Carla Bley and became a member of various Keith Jarrett groups. In the 1980s, he led his own acclaimed Quartet West.
